Clear bags at the gate: what 12 by 6 by 12 inches actually allows

A clear bag policy is one of the few shopping problems with a published answer. The gate is not judging your bag. It is measuring it.

The rule, in the words that publish it

The league that made this policy common writes it as a size and a material, with no room for interpretation.

“Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12" or 30.5 x 15.25 x 30.5 cm”

Three numbers and three materials. A bag either sits inside 12 by 6 by 12 inches or it does not, and it is either clear plastic, vinyl or PVC or it is not. The same page adds that clear backpacks, clear fanny packs and clear cinch bags all count, as long as they fit the box.

That last point surprises people at the gate. A clear backpack is allowed where a non-clear one is turned away, because the objection was never to the shape.

The second bag almost everyone misses

You are allowed a second bag, and it does not have to be clear. It has to be small.

The published limit is 4.5 by 6.5 inches, with or without a handle or strap. That is a card wallet, a wristlet or a phone pouch, and it is the difference between putting your cards on display through vinyl and keeping them in your hand.

Read that pair together and the sensible kit for an evening becomes obvious. One clear bag inside the box for everything the gate wants to see, and one small opaque pouch for the things you would rather it did not.

Every clear bag we make, measured

Below is our own catalogue against the rule. The measurements come from the maker's published figures for each piece, and where a figure is missing the row says so rather than guessing at it.

Two things fall out of the table. The clear bags in the Telena range are cut well inside the limit rather than at it, which leaves room for a venue that publishes a smaller box. And the depth number is the one to watch: height and width sit comfortably under the rule on almost everything, while depth is where a stuffed bag grows.

Why hardware and decoration matter

The policy has a line about decoration that reads like a detail and works like a rule. No buckles, grommets or decorative hardware may conceal any part of the bag, and a logo may appear on one side only.

The reason is the whole point of the policy. A clear bag is quick to check because a guard can see all of it at once. A wide leather panel across the front, a row of studs or a patterned trim gives back the hiding place the policy was written to remove.

This is why our clear pieces keep their trim narrow at the seams and their hardware at the zip. A clear bag with a solid front panel is a bag that photographs well and gets stopped.

What counts as the small non-clear bag

4.5 by 6.5 inches is smaller than it sounds. A modern phone is about 6.3 inches tall and 3 inches wide, so it fits with almost nothing beside it. A card holder fits with room to spare.

If a piece is not on that list it is because the maker publishes no measurement for it, and we would rather leave a gap than fill it with a number nobody checked.

Diaper bags, medication and the exceptions

Non-clear diaper bags are named on the prohibited list, which reads harshly until you read the exception beside it. Medically necessary items are allowed after inspection, and the policy says diapers can be carried in a clear bag.

In practice that means a family arrives with a clear bag carrying the changing kit, and each person, children included, may carry their own clear bag and a small purse.

If you need equipment that will not fit any of that, the published answer is to present it at the gate for screening rather than to leave it in the car. Security is stationed at the entrances for exactly this.

The league is not the venue

One policy became the common one, and it is now quoted at concerts, college games and county fairs that have nothing to do with football. That is convenient and it is not a guarantee.

Smaller venues borrow the wording and change the numbers. Some publish 12 by 12 by 6. Some ban bags of any kind on certain nights. Some run a size check at the door with a plastic template.

The habit worth keeping is the one the policy itself recommends: look up the venue's own page before you leave the house. It takes a minute, and it is the only version of the rule that will be applied to you.

What to carry inside a clear bag

Everything in a clear bag is on display, which changes what you pack rather than how much. Cards, cash and medication go in the small opaque pouch. Keys, a phone, a battery pack and a light layer go in the clear one.

A clear bag with a lining pocket is worth looking for. Ours put the one opaque pocket at the back panel, against the body, which is the pocket that holds a card and a note without announcing them.

Pack the bag before you leave, then look at it from three feet away. That is the view the gate gets, and it is a useful test of what you are comfortable carrying.

Living with PVC for an evening

Clear PVC behaves like no other material we work with. It holds its shape without a frame, so a clear tote stands up on a seat. It also keeps a crease where it folds, and it takes fingerprints.

Cold makes it stiffer and warmth makes it softer. A clear bag left in a car in January will feel like a different bag until it warms up, and folding it hard in that state is how the permanent crease arrives.

Store it flat or lightly stuffed rather than folded, and wipe it with a damp cloth. That is the whole maintenance routine, and it is why we do not sell a cleaner for it.

Choosing between the shapes

The choice inside a clear range is about hands, not about litres. A clear crossbody keeps both hands free and stays in front of you in a crowd. A clear tote carries a jacket and a programme and needs a hand or a shoulder. A clear belt bag holds the smallest kit and disappears under a coat.

If you go to one event a year, buy the crossbody. If you go often, the tote earns its place by carrying what you bring home.
